Precautions After Eye Surgery

  • 01
Swelling may be more severe 3 to 5 days after surgery than on the day of surgery, and while major swelling usually subsides within 2 to 4 weeks, residual swelling may last for 1 to 3 months or longer.
  • 02
It is recommended to apply cold compresses (freezing for 15 minutes) for 3 days after surgery, and warm compresses (microwave for 15 seconds) starting from the 4th day.
Due to the risk of frostbite and burns caused by temporary decreased sensation after surgery, please wrap the hot pack in gauze or a handkerchief before use.
  • 03
Apply a small amount of the prescribed eye ointment to a clean cotton swab and apply it to the surgical site until the stitches are removed. (Approximately 3 to 5 times a day.) (If there are no stitches, please apply it to the surgical site for 7 days.) If you experience itching during the recovery process, applying the same eye ointment will be helpful.
  • 04
If the prescription includes eye drops, please use them three times a day.
  • 05
If your eyes sting or feel dry, please use disposable artificial tears.
  • 06
You may wash your face, apply basic skincare products, and apply makeup starting the day after stitches are removed. (After 7 days if there are no stitches.)
Heavy eye makeup (color cosmetics such as eyeshadow, eyeliner, and mascara) can irritate the eyes, so it is recommended to wait at least 3 weeks before applying it.
  • 07
As this may increase the risk of inflammation at the surgical site, please refrain from drinking alcohol, smoking, and engaging in activities that generate heat, such as aerobics, swimming, weight training, and saunas, for one month after surgery. However, light walks are beneficial for recovery.
  • 08
If tape is attached over the eye, please keep it in place so it does not fall off until the stitches are removed.
  • 09
For those undergoing lower eyelid (lateral canthal fixation) surgery, please remove the under-eye tape yourself after 3 days.
Please do not lower your head too much, and when using your mobile phone, please hold the screen above eye level.

You can remove the tape applied under your eyes yourself after 3 days.
  • 04
Apply only a small amount of the prescribed eye ointment to a clean cotton swab (applying too much may make your vision cloudy), and apply it to the outer corner of your eye only before going to bed. Please blink gently several times to help the ointment spread to the inner mucous membrane (conjunctiva).
  • 05
Please apply the eye drops three times a day (morning, afternoon, and evening).
If your eyes feel stinging or dry, you may use artificial tears.
  • 06
Blood may pool in the eyes for 2 to 3 days after surgery. You can gently wipe away the flowing tears with a tissue.
  • 07
Please do not lower your head too much, and when using your mobile phone, please hold the screen above eye level.
